Mason Jars & Handled Mugs

A handle looks like a small detail and it changes the whole decorating job. It interrupts the wrap, it dictates which way up the piece sits in the fixture, and it means the printable band is no longer the full circumference but two shorter faces with an obstruction between them. Any quote that treats a handled mug like a straight-sided glass has not thought about it.

We map the actual printable band on the real piece and design into it. On a mason jar with a handle that usually means a front-facing panel with the artwork centred opposite the handle; on a taller glass mug it can mean two smaller marks. Either is fine, and both are much better than a wrap that runs into a handle.

Mason jars have one more quirk worth naming: the moulded thread and the shoulder taper. Artwork placed too high runs into the thread relief and prints unevenly, so we keep decoration on the straight body below the shoulder. Where a lid is part of the order, we will tell you whether the lid takes decoration well — usually a printed or embossed metal lid does, and a plastic straw lid does not.

Can you print all the way round a handled mug?

No, and nobody can. The handle interrupts the circumference and it also determines how the piece is held in the printing fixture, so the usable area is one front panel opposite the handle or two smaller side panels. That is not a limitation worth fighting: a centred front panel is where the eye goes anyway. We map the real printable band on the actual piece and lay the artwork into it at proof.

Why can the artwork not go higher on a mason jar?

The moulded thread and the shoulder taper. Above the shoulder the surface stops being a straight cylinder and the thread relief makes the surface uneven, so ink lays down inconsistently and a screen cannot hold contact. Keeping the decoration on the straight body below the shoulder gives a clean, even print, and it is also where the jar is gripped and seen.
