Etched & Sandblasted Glassware

Etching is the only decoration on this site that is not applied to the glass at all. Sandblasting drives abrasive against a masked surface and removes material; laser etching fractures the surface layer to the same visual effect. What is left is frosted glass in the shape of your artwork, and since nothing has been added there is nothing to wear away.

That makes it the right choice for awards, gifts, hospitality glassware that has to last, and anything where the glass itself is the product. It also has two honest limits worth knowing before you fall in love with a file. It renders as a single frosted tone, so gradients and photographs do not translate and line art and solid shapes do; and depth is constrained on tempered glass, because tempering puts the strength into a thin compressive surface layer and cutting deep into that layer risks the piece.

So we treat depth as a specification. Shallow surface frost on tempered barware, deeper relief on annealed stock where the design calls for it, and a clear statement of which you are getting. Where a client wants both a deep engrave and a tempered glass, we will explain the conflict rather than take the order and hope.

Will etching wear off in a dishwasher?
It cannot. Etching removes glass rather than adding a coating, so there is no film, ink or layer for detergent, heat or abrasion to attack. What you see is the shape of the missing material. That is why etch is the default for hospitality glassware that has to survive years of commercial washing, and for awards that need to look the same in a decade.
How deep can you etch a tempered glass?
Not very, and we would rather say so before quoting. Tempering works by putting the surface of the glass into compression, and that compressive layer is thin. Cutting deep into it removes the very thing giving the glass its strength and can cause it to fail, sometimes not immediately. On tempered barware we keep etching to a shallow surface frost, which looks excellent. Where a deep tactile engrave is the point, we quote annealed stock instead.
