Whiskey & Rocks Glasses
A rocks glass gets held, turned and looked at in a way a pint glass never does, which changes what a good decoration is. The printable band is short, the wall is often thick and slightly convex, and the heavy base refracts anything printed low on the glass into something unintended.
So placement matters more here than anywhere else in the range. We keep the decoration in the upper two thirds of the wall where it will not be distorted by the base, and at least 20mm below the rim. On a thick convex wall a smaller, denser mark almost always reads better than a large sparse one, and we will say so at proof stage rather than after four hundred glasses are printed.
Etching is the other route and it suits these particularly well. Sandblast or laser etching leaves a permanent frosted mark that cannot fade, survives any wash, and looks considerably more expensive than it costs. It renders as frost rather than colour, so a photographic design does not translate, and on tempered stock we keep the depth shallow because the toughening lives in a thin compressive surface layer.
